For the very first time, the Jakarta Wine Festival will take place from August 31, 2023, to September 2, 2023, at the Astha Mall District 8. This grand event brings together hundreds of wine varieties from around the world under one roof, accompanied by a diverse range of educational sessions dedicated to the world of wine.
The inception of the Jakarta Wine Festival can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of Pritha Casadevall and Poetri Andayani. Originating from the Jakarta Wine Club Series community, which Pritha founded in 2019, the festival has now evolved into a larger endeavor. With a staggering 480 members and a track record of consistent wine education activities, both Pritha and Poetri decided to create a platform that would make wine education entertaining and accessible to all. “We aimed to provide a space for everyone to learn about wine in an engaging and educational manner,” Pritha stated.
The festival adopts the theme “Art of Celebration,” which unites wine enthusiasts, art aficionados, and anyone interested in embracing life to the fullest. Consequently, the Jakarta Wine Festival collaborates with individuals from diverse fields, age groups, and backgrounds to collectively appreciate the joys of life through wine, art, and cuisine.
While the theme revolves around celebration, it doesn’t overlook the educational aspect that remains at the core of the Jakarta Wine Festival. The event encompasses a total of 20 workshops covering topics ranging from wine and art to culinary experiences, mental health, and sustainability. The workshops cater to both beginners in the world of wine and seasoned experts. For novices, workshops include introductions to wine varieties, understanding wine glasses, deciphering wine menus, and more. Advanced participants can delve into wine and cheese pairings, wine and oyster pairings, and even food pairings guided by renowned chefs. Notably, the festival also offers the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 certification program. Esteemed figures from Indonesia’s wine scene, such as Pritha Casadevall, Kerta Widyawati, Ponti Young, and Kiki Moka, contribute their expertise as instructors. Beyond wine, attendees can engage in cooking classes and art workshops, including watercolor painting and art creation using recycled wine bottles.
The spirit of appreciation and artistic celebration is embodied in an exhibition that showcases the works of Indonesian artists spanning various disciplines such as painting, installations, multimedia, graphics, macramé, and ceramics—all with an emphasis on promoting sustainability. The event’s main location at Ashta District 8 (Ground Floor) is complemented by Spac8 (Upper Ground Floor), serving as a hub for culinary tenants. Spicy local cuisine takes the spotlight in this culinary showcase.
Visitors attending the festival will have the opportunity to savor wines and culinary delights presented on-site. With over 300 local and international wine selections available, one can acquire a wine tasting token priced at Rp349,000, enabling the tasting of 5 different wines and a glass. To ensure informed choices, newcomers can partake in private tours to gain insights from all the vendors before using their tokens.
For food enthusiasts, a food token worth Rp200,000 can be exchanged for cheese platters and dishes from the food vendors in Space8. In an effort to support environmental conservation, vendors will not provide tasting glasses. Instead, these glasses will be distributed via tokens, and they can be taken home. Collaborating with recycling partner Octopus Indonesia, all used wine bottles will be recycled 100%.
The Jakarta Wine Festival of 2023 promises to be a vibrant celebration of life, culture, and the art of enjoying fine wines and exquisite cuisine. As it assembles individuals from various backgrounds, it truly epitomizes the harmonious fusion of education, appreciation, and festivity.
