Tamba by Junsei has opened in Sanur, introducing a new concept that combines Japanese tea culture, vinyl listening, and modern cocktails in one intimate space. Located on Jalan Tamblingan next to Junsei, the yakitori restaurant led by Executive Chef Aman Lakhiani, Tamba transitions from a Japanese tea room during the day into a listening bar in the evening.
Open from 10 a.m., the tea room focuses on Japanese tea traditions through a selection of matcha, hōjicha, and genmaicha, alongside Japanese-inspired snacks and seasonal sweets. From 5 p.m. until late, the space transforms into a vinyl listening bar featuring fermentation-driven cocktails, rare spirits, and a custom-built sound system designed for an intimate music experience.
Chef Aman, a long-time vinyl collector, created Tamba around the idea of combining “vintage soul with modern precision.” The concept reflects his interest in both Japanese tea craftsmanship and music culture, bringing together carefully prepared beverages, curated sound, and a relaxed setting.
The tea programme introduces guests to different styles of Japanese tea, including first-harvest Okumidori matcha from Wazuka, Kyoto, as well as matchas from Shizuoka and Kagoshima served as traditional usucha, lattes, or iced preparations. Other selections include smoky Hōjicha and nutty Genmaicha, with selected drinks featuring raw, unpasteurised Indonesian honey sourced from single-origin Java apiaries.
The tea menu is accompanied by Japanese-inspired bites and desserts designed to be enjoyed alongside the drinks, including mango mochi and lemon and Earl Grey tart.
At night, Tamba’s cocktail programme, titled Volume 01, is developed by Head Bartender Dedi Mulyadi and explores flavours influenced by fermentation, preservation, and umami. The menu includes cocktails such as Quiet Path, featuring koji for a savoury depth, Umetini with kombu vermouth, and Burnt Rice, which combines roasted rice syrup with brown butter foam.
The space itself features dark wood interiors, vinyl records lining the walls, a central bar that functions as both the drinks counter and vinyl deck, and a custom sound system designed to create an immersive listening environment while maintaining an intimate atmosphere.
Tamba continues the culinary philosophy of Junsei by focusing on craftsmanship, precision, and a balance between tradition and contemporary interpretation. Beyond its daily tea and cocktail programmes, the venue will host regular music events including Wax Wednesdays, an open-deck vinyl night, as well as Flip Friday and Highball Hi-Fi on Saturdays featuring vinyl selectors and guest DJs.
Tamba by Junsei is open Tuesday to Sunday, with tea room hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and listening bar hours from 5 p.m. until late. A daily Happy Hour featuring buy-one-get-one promotions on selected cocktails is available from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
