Labuan Bajo has spent years building its reputation as one of Indonesia’s most compelling travel destinations — a gateway to Komodo National Park, a port for liveaboard diving, and increasingly, a draw for travelers who want something beyond the itinerary. What it has lacked, until recently, is a bar that reflects the ambition of the destination itself. Maiga! Bar, which opened at TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Labuan Bajo, is a credible answer to that gap.

The name comes from the local Manggarai dialect — maiga means ‘come drink.’ It is a fitting choice for a bar that positions itself as a gathering point rather than a hotel amenity, built on a jetty above the Flores Sea with architecture drawn from the organic shapes of clam shells. The interior concept, described by the property as ‘Land Dweller Meets Sea Nomads,’ references the maritime culture of the region through handcrafted macramé partitions made by local artisans from Labuan Bajo. Whether or not the concept lands for every visitor, the physical setting is difficult to argue with.

THE MENU

The beverage program at Maiga! Bar is divided into two collections — ‘Sea Nomad’ and ‘Land Dweller’ — each drawing from the region’s history and natural larder. Local ingredients anchor the menu: Flores coffee, grown in the volcanic soil of the island, appears across multiple serves, while sopi, a traditional craft liquor produced in Flores, is used as a base in several cocktails. The approach positions the menu as a document of place rather than a list of drinks — a philosophy that has become increasingly common in serious cocktail programs internationally, and one that is still relatively rare in Eastern Indonesia.

The program is also designed to evolve. Through a ‘Cheers to Community’ initiative, TA’AKTANA invites internationally recognised bartenders for bar takeovers at Maiga!, with each visit accompanied by masterclasses for the in-house team. The stated aim is to expose local talent to the operational standards of the world’s leading bars — a model that, done consistently, could position Labuan Bajo as a more serious stop on the regional bar circuit than it currently is.

ONE COCKTAIL, ONE CORAL

The most distinctive element of the Maiga! proposition is its environmental program. For every signature cocktail sold, TA’AKTANA contributes to a reef restoration initiative overseen by the resort’s in-house marine biologist. The program, called ‘One Cocktail, One Coral,’ connects the bar’s revenue directly to coral replanting efforts in the surrounding waters.

It is a model that has appeared in various forms at dive resorts across Southeast Asia, but it is less common at a dedicated bar program. The coral colonies planted through the initiative are visible from the bar’s deck on clear days — a detail that gives the concept tangible presence rather than leaving it as a line on a menu. Whether guests engage with it as an environmental commitment or simply as a striking view is, ultimately, their choice.

TA’AKTANA opened in 2024 as part of The Luxury Collection by Marriott International, offering 45 suites and 25 private villas across six dining and drinking venues. Maiga! Bar sits at the end of the resort’s jetty — the furthest point from land and, architecturally, the most exposed to the sea. It is a considered position for a bar that wants to be understood as a destination in its own right.

Peter-Paul Kleiss, General Manager of TA’AKTANA, frames the bar’s ambition in terms that go beyond the hospitality standard. “MAIGA! Bar is more than a social destination,” he said. “It is a sanctuary where our guests can enjoy a sophisticated evening while knowing they are contributing to the longevity and professional empowerment of the vibrant community we call home.”

Labuan Bajo does not have a deep bench of cocktail bars. For most visitors, drinking well has meant returning to the resort, making do with what the boat serves, or going without. Maiga! Bar is not trying to fix all of that at once — but it is trying to be the bar that changes the expectation of what is possible here. For a destination that has waited this long for a bar with genuine intent behind it, that is a reasonable start.
