The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. In 2026, that date lands on 25 September. Rooted in Chinese tradition, the occasion centres on reunion. Families gather beneath the full moon, give thanks for the harvest, and exchange mooncakes as a gesture of togetherness and goodwill — a practice believed to trace back over a thousand years, with roots in both harvest worship and, according to popular legend, a moon goddess named Chang’e who drifted to the moon after consuming an elixir of immortality.

The mooncake itself carries that symbolism in its shape. Round, dense, and traditionally filled with lotus seed paste and salted egg yolk, it stands in for the full moon on the table, its wholeness a stand-in for family unity. Regional variations have multiplied over centuries — Cantonese baked mooncakes, Suzhou-style flaky pastry versions, and, more recently, snow skin mooncakes, a chilled, mochi-like format that dispenses with baking altogether in favour of a soft, glutinous shell. In Jakarta, where Chinese-Indonesian communities have marked the festival for generations, the occasion has evolved into an annual showcase of pastry craft and packaging design, led largely by the city’s five-star hotels.

Eight hotels across the city have released 2026 collections that treat the mooncake box as seriously as what’s inside it. Here they are, in alphabetical order.

Grand Hyatt’s collection this year comes in two sets built for different scales of gifting. Celestial Blue offers four handcrafted baked flavours — White Lotus with Single Egg Yolk, White Lotus, Red Lotus, and Red Bean Paste — while the more compact Moonlit Blue pares things down to two: White Lotus with Single Egg Yolk and Red Bean. Both use premium ingredients and traditional recipes, with packaging inspired by the form of lotus blossoms.

Park Hyatt Jakarta

Li Lian is marking its first-ever Mid-Autumn celebration this year. Under Executive Chinese Chef Tan Kwang Aik, the four-flavour Mid-Autumn Harmony selection pairs Black Sesame Single Egg Yolk and White Lotus Single Egg Yolk with two Indonesian additions — Pandan and Durian. Moonlit Harmony includes one of each flavour, while Celestial Harmony adds the restaurant’s Signature Tea Pecan Cookies to the same base.

Shangri-La Jakarta

Shangri-La’s The Lantern of Reunion spans eight flavours in its Traditional Baked Mooncake range — White Lotus, Red Bean, Bamboo Charcoal Pandan, Black Sesame, Tiramisu Coffee, and Taro Lotus Seed Paste among them — presented in lantern-inspired crimson red and blush pink boxes, with select flavours made using reduced-sugar recipes. A Snow Skin Mooncake Collection is also available, including an Egg Custard with Musang King Durian and a Macadamia Praline Chocolate Ganache.

The Langham, Jakarta

Crafted by the culinary team at T’ang Court, The Langham’s 2026 collection pairs Cantonese heritage technique with a more contemporary flavour or two. The four-piece box includes White Lotus with Single Yolk and White Lotus with Double Yolk alongside a Red Bean Tangerine and a Green Tea with Rose, Raspberry, and Pecan. The presentation draws from the blooming peony, rendered across a chest-style box designed to be reused as a keepsake.
