A Phinisi Journey Exploring Indonesia’s Maritime Heritage

The Apurva Kempinski Bali officially announces a new partnership with Indonesian yachting specialist Yacht Sourcing to introduce Spice Route Voyage. This seven-day journey is designed to revive the history of the spice trade across the Indonesian archipelago. The program serves as a key initiative in the resort’s 2026 brand campaign, Powerful Indonesia: Spice Route Legacy. Reservations are now open, with the inaugural sailing scheduled to commence in April 2026.

Reviving Indonesia's Maritime Heritage

For more than 4,500 years, the Indonesian archipelago has been the world’s most valuable source of spices—including cloves, nutmeg, pepper, and sandalwood—connecting Nusantara with great civilizations in China, India, Arabia, and Europe. The spice routes not only shaped empires and facilitated the exchange of ideas and beliefs but also positioned Indonesia as a global trading hub. Today, The Apurva Kempinski Bali seeks to revive this legacy by weaving the spice route narrative into a guest experience that offers both material luxury and profound cultural meaning.

During a five-day immersive experience, guests will sail aboard a traditional wooden phinisi schooner, tracing waters once used as ancient trade routes. The journey explores rarely visited historic destinations, from North Maluku, the legendary Clove Islands of Ternate and Tidore to the Banda Islands, the world’s original source of nutmeg, and onward to the maritime kingdoms of South Sulawesi and East Nusa Tenggara.

Following the voyage, guests will enjoy a two-night stay at the Nusantara Presidential Villa, where the celebration of the spice route heritage continues through a curated program for up to six guests. The experience includes breakfast, exclusive transfers, a Majapahit Royal Dinner, Afternoon Tea, a spice route–themed cocktail session at L’Atelier by Cyril Kongo, and a relaxation treatment at Apurva Spa

The Partnership

Spice Route Voyage is born from a long-term collaboration between The Apurva Kempinski Bali and Yacht Sourcing, grounded in the belief that world-class travel should honor local culture and communities. Founded in Bali in 2016, Yacht Sourcing has established itself as a leading Indonesian marine leisure company committed to preserving the nation’s maritime heritage. Their fleet of hand-built phinisi vessels reflects a dedication to nurturing future generations of Indonesian seafarers and storytellers.

Vincent Guironnet, General Manager of The Apurva Kempinski Bali, stated that the resort’s role goes beyond accommodation. It serves as a living bridge connecting guests with the archipelago’s grand heritage. Similarly, Boumedienne Senous, Founder and CEO of Yacht Sourcing, emphasized that the most meaningful luxury is that which gives back to Indonesia’s land, sea, and people.

The synergy between the two brands has been firmly established. In 2024, they collaborated on an exclusive gala dinner at Black Stone Yacht Club, Bali, where a Michelin-level chef from Koral Restaurant curated a bespoke menu for VIP guests. The event represented the core expertise of both brands: transforming cultural heritage into tangible, memorable experiences.

Indonesia's Spice Route Legacy

This year marks The Apurva Kempinski Bali’s seventh anniversary of redefining hospitality standards in Indonesia. Since opening, the resort has been guided by a singular vision: to present world-class luxury rooted in Indonesia’s cultural richness, arts, wellness, and gastronomy. Over the years, the five-star resort has established itself not merely as a grand hotel, but as a guardian of Indonesia’s cultural narrative.

Powerful Indonesia: Spice Route Legacy is a year-long campaign featuring cultural activations, curated guest experiences, gastronomic journeys, and artistic expressions that trace the enduring influence of the spice route.

Spice Route Voyage represents its most ambitious expression, expanding storytelling beyond the cliffs of Nusa Dua into the open seas. The campaign also reflects the evolving expectations of today’s discerning luxury travelers, who increasingly seek cultural authenticity and immersive depth rather than exceptional facilities alone. The Apurva Kempinski Bali aligns personalized guest experiences, refined luxury service, and cultural integrity as complementary pillars of its philosophy.

“Indonesia’s Spice Route is one of the great untold stories of world civilization, a network of seas and islands that connected humanity long before the age of exploration. At The Apurva Kempinski Bali, our role extends beyond offering a beautiful place to stay. We serve as a living bridge for guests to connect with the archipelago’s grand heritage. Spice Route Voyage, together with our trusted partner Yacht Sourcing, is the embodiment of this vision,a rare, meaningful, and unforgettable journey. This is Indonesia as it should be remembered,” said Vincent Guironnet, General Manager of The Apurva Kempinski Bali.
