Coinciding with the exhibition Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me, Museum MACAN and Common Grounds, a national coffee shop brand that provides premium coffee while supporting the local community, is launching a creative partnership. Sharing the same spirit to collaborate with and support local creatives, the partnership was kicked off with the opening of Common Grounds pop-up café inside the Museum in May 2022, where it received a warm welcome from the visitors.

On the strength of this initial offering, the creative partnership is being extended to roll out to all 11 Common Grounds outlets. Common Grounds customers will be able to see Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me promotions in the form of posters, coffee cup sleeves, and placemats that are placed in the outlets, as well as ticket discounts for Common Grounds customers.

One special project to celebrate the museum’s current exhibition, Common Grounds is creating a pastry inspired by Agus Suwage with the help and input from the artist. Agus Suwage enjoys food, and he particularly loves corn ever since he was just a boy. From the conversation and discussion with the artist, Common Grounds have come up with a cookie called Salted Caramel Popcorn. The soft cookie is filled with caramel popcorn, miso caramel, and hazelnut, topped with a skull-shaped brown sugar cookie inspired by Agus Suwage’s works which often features skulls. This special menu will be available at Common Grounds outlets in Museum MACAN, starting from 24 August 2022.

Aaron Seeto, Director, Museum MACAN said, “This is a fun collaboration, bringing food, coffee, artists, and the Indonesian public together. Creativity is at the heart of this partnership and we can’t wait to see what comes up next. This collaboration will bring Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me exhibition to reach a wider audience in a more approachable way.”

Aston Utan, co-founder, Common Grounds said, “I’m grateful to be able to grow in the middle of major artworks, where art always becomes a main topic in the family conversation. Both my parents are art collectors and they planted the seeds of high appreciation for the arts since I was very young. I feel that both art and specialty coffee share some things in common. Both are very personal and closely related with maturity, in terms of production and appreciation. The collaboration between Common Grounds, Museum MACAN, and Agus Suwage isn’t the absolute way to enjoy things, but an encouragement for more people to acknowledge and cherish the creation process of masterpieces, and we are humbled to be part of this effort. We hope this collaboration can create a ripple that will enable us to break boundaries and reach more audiences to appreciate art. Because just like coffee, an artwork will be able to speak more when enjoyed with different sensorial experiences.

As part of the partnership, Museum MACAN and Common Grounds are offering a special promotion. Customers who buy any beverages at any Common Grounds outlet, will receive the exclusive Agus Suwage: The Theater of Me coffee sleeves, which contain special offers to purchase tickets in Museum MACAN. They can bring the cup sleeve to the museum and redeem it for a special priced exhibition ticket. This promotion is valid only for on-site ticket bookings (at ticketing counter on level 2 Museum MACAN) until the exhibition ends on 15 October 2022.
