Weekends provide the perfect opportunity for some “me time” in the comfort of my room, indulging in a K-Drama marathon. This time, I decided to revisit the captivating series “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay,” featuring the remarkable performances of actors Kim Soo Hyun and Seo Yea Ji. While engrossed in the episodes, something caught my attention and piqued my curiosity.

It was the delectable dishes that the cast enjoyed throughout the drama. One dish, in particular, resembled ramyeon, the beloved Korean noodles, but with an intriguing addition of shells. The actors savored each spoonful of the noodle soup with such enthusiasm that it left me wondering—was it truly as scrumptious as it appeared on screen?

What is Jjampong?

Jjamppong, a popular Korean spicy noodle soup teeming with a generous serving of seafood, has gained quite a reputation. Its vibrant red sauce, boasting an invigorating spiciness, tends to leave people irresistibly hooked. Unlike instant noodles like ramyeon, this delightful dish features fresh noodles, crisp vegetables, and an assortment of seafood that includes shrimp, mussels, squid, and clams. The distinctive fiery flavor is derived from a broth seasoned with gochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes). To complement the soup, it is traditionally served with side dishes known as banchan.

Interestingly, despite its association with Korean cuisine, jjamppong’s origins lie beyond the borders of Korea. It was actually created by Chinese immigrants residing in Nagasaki, Japan, during the 1940s. However, due to its widespread appeal and compatibility with local tastes, this seafood-infused noodle dish flourished and eventually made its way to Korea in the 1960s.

There are three distinct ways to enjoy jjamppong. Firstly, some individuals opt to savor jjamppong with rice instead of noodles, creating a unique twist on the traditional preparation. Secondly, there is a “dry” version of jjamppong known as gan-jjamppong. In this variation, the noodles are stir-fried alongside an enticing blend of seafood, vegetables, and an array of spices that impart a delectable savory and spicy flavor. Lastly, despite its association with seafood, several restaurants offer an alternative take on jjamppong by serving it with a rich broth derived from long-boiled chicken, beef, or pork.
