Demitria Dana Paramita, also known as Demi, has been making significant strides in the field of mixology. Originating from Medan, Indonesia, Demi has swiftly gained recognition as a bartender renowned for her inventive cocktails and unwavering commitment to the craft. Demi’s journey began in 2015.  She quickly established a reputation for excellence, winning the Best Belvedere Martini Competition in Kuala Lumpur. This early success showcased her talent for crafting exceptional drinks.

Fast forward to 2020, and Demi’s skills were on full display at the prestigious Bacardi Legacy competition.  Emerging victorious, she secured the title for Singapore.  Her talent continued to impress, landing her a coveted Top 5 spot in The Blend Scholarship for the World’s 50 Best Bars in 2023.

Following her international success, Demi returned to Indonesia in 2022 to leverage her expertise.  She currently leads the beverage program at People of the Sun Bar, a vibrant tequila haven launched by Tavern Group Semarang.

“Bacardi Legacy was the longest bartending competition I’ve ever encountered, and I actually did so much during that competition,” Demi shared. “It’s not only about making drinks, but knowing how to market it and make it as memorable as possible not only in the current country where I represent Singapore as the Champion of Bacardi Legacy 2020.”

Demi’s path hasn’t been without obstacles.  As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, she has encountered instances where her abilities were questioned.  However, the industry is undergoing a positive shift towards collaboration, and Demi finds strength in the growing sense of camaraderie among bartenders.

“Either way, I’m proud to change my surroundings mindset about holding onto this profession as my career. Being Medanese in Indonesia has become a very least expected profession in my family. And making them proud of me choosing this path is amazing,” she reflected.

Demi’s journey exemplifies the spirit of Kartini Day.  Like the pioneering women who championed education and progress, Demi has carved her own path, defying expectations and inspiring others.

Discussing her personal journey and the challenges she has encountered, Demi recounted past perceptions and the evolving landscape of the industry.

“When I first started, there were a few moments that guests thought I didn’t know how to make good cocktails just because I am a woman,” she shared. “But usually, other colleagues would ask us to make it to gain the trust of the guest. But that was a long time ago.”

The perception of bartending is undergoing a refreshing transformation. Not only is the profession gaining well-deserved recognition, but female bartenders are leading the charge. Demi acknowledges this positive shift and expresses her gratitude for the strong sense of teamwork within the industry.

In reflecting on her journey, Demi acknowledged the influential figures who have inspired her in the field of bartending. ” Bannie Kang is the first female bartender with whom I worked in my career. She was actually my mentor too, back at Anti:Dote Bar Singapore. Shirmy Chan and Amanda Wan are also individuals who taught me a lot about bartending,” she shared.

This collaborative spirit transcends gender, Demi emphasizes. Bartenders, regardless of background, work together to craft unforgettable experiences for their customers. This newfound unity highlights the growing professionalism and camaraderie defining the modern bar scene.

Drawing inspiration from her culinary background and love for exploration, Demi shared insights into her creative process and the sources that fuel her unique cocktails.

“Travel actually helps the most,” she explained. “And usually, I like to hang out in a grocery store/local market and spend my time seeing ingredients. I used to study culinary arts. I appreciate the ingredients and flavors a lot.”

As she continues to break barriers and inspire aspiring mixologists, Demi remains committed to empowering women in the F&B industry.

“FnB Industry is a very beautiful Industry,” she affirmed. “Filled with so many hospitality background people. I guess hospitality manners run through our blood. Just approach any of us when you have difficulties in your bar career experience, and we will always be more than happy to help. Don’t Give Up!”
