For my first-ever stay in Canggu, I indulged in a staycation at the brand-new COMO Uma Canggu.
I find myself visiting Canggu more and more every time I am on the Island. Not only are there creative and interesting cafés, bars and restaurants, there is also an eclectic mix of cuisines, healthy options and small warungs which will fit any palate and budget. It is slowly becoming the new Seminyak, albeit a bit annoying because of the narrow streets.
COMO Uma Canggu – COMO’s third property in Bali – is tucked away behind these establishments on one of Canggu’s busiest streets. The only thing that gives it away is the hotel’s small sign, which you might miss if you weren’t paying attention.
The beachside resort boasts 119 contemporary rooms, suites, one- and two- bedroom residences, as well as three-bedroom duplex penthouses featuring individual rooftop pools. The resort sits on 2.2 acres on the beautiful Canggu coast, known for its surf breaks and black sand. Designed to COMO’s highest principles of sophisticated living, the aesthetic breaks new ground for beachside Bali, combining modern Asian and Italian touches created by long-time COMO collaborators, interior designers Koichiro Ikebuchi and Paola Navone.
A classy and unpretentious vibe welcomes you when you enter the property. The hotel’s lobby is bright and airy, the staff are genuine and friendly. Its sleek, low-lying buildings surround a sexy lagoon pool, tropical flowers and foliage abound, providing adequate cover from the scorching sun.
I was lead to my accommodations for my stay, one of the 12 two-level penthouses. With three-bedroom, this massive unit can comfortably fit 6 people. It has a fully functioning kitchen, a living room and a dining room. The highlight of course was the second floor master’s bedroom with its own 10-meter infinity pool and their distinctive half-moon openings, which perfectly frame the Indian Ocean views. Truly stunning. It was going to be hard to pry me away from my reclining position on the daybed.
A grumbling belly forced me to explore the rest of the property in search for sustenance. The DJ’s beats were like a homing signal for me to explore the COMO Beach Club’s offerings. The hotel’s only restaurant, COMO Beach Club serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails, snacks, fresh juices and a whole lot of chilled vibes. Interior designer Navone plays playful tribute to Bali by way of bright and bold prints, many lounging options – including the tricky hanging beds – poolside cocoons, and industrial-style frames. Think surf shack chic.
The dishes are all made using ingredients sourced from across the island, with a focus on ‘New World cuisine’. A charcoal grill, used for meats, seafood and vegetables, imparts rich, smoky flavors. Healthy and energizing COMO Shambhala Cuisine is available here. Not only ingredients are sourced locally, all the items on which the food are served on – wooden and bamboo serving dishes, glasses, cutlery and tableware all have connection to Bali.
For those seeking wellness and rejuvenation, the property has a new COMO Shambhala Retreat. Known for its Asian-inspired therapies – including their signature COMO Shambhala Massage – they also offer yoga and Pilates classes for hotel guests and the local community, as well as personal training at the gym. I have to admit, the COMO Shambhala Massage was one of the best massages I have ever had. I was putty in the hands of the expert therapist, my aching muscles were kneaded and stroked, and soon enough I had dozed off to dreamland.
Taking full advantage of their location on Echo Beach, COMO Uma Canggu offers spectacular surf opportunities. The luxury surfing concept, in partnership with Tropicsurf, will appeal to surfers of any level, from beginners to experts. Novices can learn surfing foundations under an expert eye of a pro. The property also offers guests a range of cultural and adventure activities across southern and central Bali, including guided temple visits by the sea, jungle trekking, canoeing expeditions and traditional village walks.
I spent four amazing days at COMO Uma Canggu, and when the time came to leave, I was having separation anxiety. A real gem in the heart of Canggu, this property is one that you must stay at during your next visit.

Infusing modern art into a classic Christmas theme.
THIS YEAR, Pullman Jakarta Central Park is taking on the classic Wonderland theme as part of their festive and holiday season celebration, with an exciting line up of Christmas and New Year events highlighted by delightful cuisines and out-of-this-world treats. Right from the moment their modern art themed Christmas tree is lit in the month of November 2018 all the way up to New Year’s celebration, Pullman Jakarta Central Park promises a celebration worthy of the spirit of Christmas.
Christmas and New Year celebrations wouldn’t be complete without delightful feasts. Pullman Jakarta Central Park will host a Christmas Eve Dinner on 24th December 2018, and a Christmas Day Brunch & Dinner on the 25th December 2018 at Collage All Day Dining. The buffet menu will vary from traditional festive favourites to succulent Western, Asian, Indian cuisines and not to be missed, the very best heavenly sweet selections.
This year’s festive offering at Collage All Day Dining is especially delightful thanks to the recent arrival of Daniel Edwards, a veteran head chef responsible for the success of Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort where he redefined the hotel’s signature restaurant, Cuca, and breathed a new culinary identity into the award-winning restaurant.
Chef Edwards hopes to do the same thing with Collage All Day Dining, as the chef explained, “Collage at Pullman Jakarta Central Park has a very unique position and a healthy, regular crowd. This can be further improved by upping the buffet and a la carte offering to speak greater statement about the quality of our food and the property itself. This new festive offering is just the start – look out for more fantastic programs soon!”
One of the new, festive specials a la carte courses at Collage All Day Dining created by Chef Edwards include the Tuna Toro, which nicely plates juicy, perfectly cooked tuna slices with vegetable cutlets and edible flowers. Another Christmas delicacy to enjoy is the US Angus Beef served with torched onion, baby tomatoes, baked potato, and steamed asparagus. As for desserts, the chef has prepared tasty treats such as the White Chocolate Truffle dessert which comes in the form of a mini Yule log with all the festive and sweet garnishes – truly a finisher worthy of the Christmas spirit.
Further into spreading the holiday joy to friends and loved ones, exclusive ‘suitcase’ hampers and goodies are also available at Collage All Day Dining starting from November to December 2018.

FoodieS Magazine and AQUA Reflections proudly announced the Top 40 winners of the inaugural Bali’s Best Eats Awards at the Awards Gala on 29 November 2018 at Ayana Resort & Spa, Jimbaran, Bali
Recognizing the large manifestation of quality restaurants in Bali and the rise of a foodie-driven culture in locals and tourists alike, FoodieS Magazine together with the leading mineral water in the country, AQUA Reflections, expands the Best Eats concept and launched the first reputable search for world-class dining venues on the Island of Gods, Bali. Bali’s Best Eats Award provides an expert eye to inform local and international diners and travelers alike about the creative talents behind Bali’s lucrative culinary industry and inspire chefs and restaurateurs to continuously develop world-class dining experiences.
Encouraging A World-Class Dining Scene
Prominent international awards have taken on nearby cities like Bangkok, Seoul, and Singapore, giving chefs there a chance to bask in the international spotlight. It’s time for the hard working and aspiring local chefs in Bali to receive similar recognition.
Jed Doble, the Publisher of FoodieS Magazine said, “We wanted to create an award system not only as a guide for diners to choose the best dining venues in Bali but also to show visitors to Bali all the great work that chefs on the island have been doing and what truly sets one restaurant apart from another. Bali’s Best Eats Awards will encourage culinary creativity and excellence, drive the local scene to even greater heights and help ensure that every night is fully booked at the restaurants.”
Manifestation of “Reflections of You” in Culinary Industry
Reflections of You, a campaign by AQUA Reflections that continuously appreciates Indonesian inspirational figures who dedicate themselves in lifestyle, art, fashion, as well as culinary industry. Working together with FoodieS Magazine allows AQUA Reflections to give appreciation to culinary industry talents who are constantly progressing the industry by raising the quality of their offerings, actively stepping up industry standards, and being able to compete by international standards.
“We are taking a tangible step to show our commitment as AQUA Reflections in contributing to lift–up the standard in quality for Indonesia’s culinary industry through Bali’s Best Eats. In addition, we hope that Bali’s Best Eats will trigger more local culinary talents to keep on progressing and innovating to achieve excellence in the Bali culinary industry”, said Flora Tobing, AQUA Reflections Brand Manager.
Bali’s Best Eats Judging
Bali’s Best Eats has assembled a panel of reputable industry experts from diverse backgrounds and specialties, to ensure a credible, honest and ethical judging process. The judging panel included:
- Yuda Bustara – Celebrity Chef
- Janet de Neefe – Founder, Ubud Food Festival
- Sandra Djohan – Chef & Hotelier
- Jed Doble – Publisher, FoodieS Magazine
- Guillaume Epinette – Sommelier & Hotelier
- Pierre Lang – Gourmand and member Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Baillage Bali
- Rinrin Marinka – Celebrity Chef

Restaurants were segmented and competed in one of three categories: Fine Dining – venues making an illustrious effort in the pursuit of perfection in taste, presentation, creativity, service and table arrangement. Upscale Dining – venues going the extra mile to provide foodies with a smart, conceptual dining in an inviting ambience. Casual Dining – venues that rose above many other establishments, offering relaxed, lively and straightforward food and beverage experiences.
The establishments were judged on the following criteria:
50% – Cuisine, based on taste, creativity and execution
20% – Quality of service
20% – Drinks menu or wine list
10% – Interior design or character
Each judge can only vote for a restaurant if they had eaten at the restaurant in the last 12 months. All past visits to the restaurants were made without identifying themselves as part of the jury. Further, the award organizers, sponsors, short- listed restaurants and jury members kept the restaurant selection and deliberation process confidential before the awards night. They also certified that they had not been offered nor had they received any incentives as part of the judging process.
