AQUA Reflections Presents Eko Nugroho
Aqua invited contemporary artist Eko Nugroho to create the designs that adorn the still and sparkling bottles of Reflections, the premium offering from the nation’s most famous purveyors of bottled mineral water.
“This collaboration is part of a marketing campaign called ‘Reflections of You,” said Disa Lestari, Aqua’s senior brand manager.
Aqua has collaborated for years with prominent Indonesian artists and designers to beautify the glass bottles in which Reflections is presented. Previously, Aqua worked with high-fashion designers Sebastian Gunawan and Tex Saverio to design the first and second editions of Reflections’ premium bottles.
Eko Nugroho was chosen to do the third edition for his quirky, graffiti-style art, which has garnered him much international recognition.
The 40-year-old has been featured in international exhibitions such as “Roots, Indonesian Contemporary Art” in Frankfurt in 2015, the 10th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea in 2014 and “RALLY: Contemporary Indonesian Art” at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne in 2012.
Eko has also collaborated with French fashion house Louis Vuitton to create a special edition scarf.
“His works reflect his strong personality,” Disa said. “We hope this collaboration can inspire more Indonesians to express themselves through art.”
The Yogyakarta-born artist said he adopted a bening (clear) theme in line with the principles of Aqua.
“’Clear’ is more of an attempt to deepen the meaning as something that is beneficial to health,” Eko said during a press conference.
Within a span of three weeks, Eko said he had prepared 10 images for the project. “There were also colorful ones that are a signature of my work. However, two were chosen in the end, one blue and one green.”
The artist said that the design represented a person peeking, adding that the work was a reflection of modern society. As an artist, he tried to convey in his work the themes of “masks” and “identity” that are relevant to today, Eko said.
As one of the nation’s leading contemporary artists, Eko has seen his work exhibited at numerous international festivals and galleries. Between 2000 and 2015, Eko joined 14 exhibitions and took part in eight artist residency programs abroad.
