Neighborhood Eats: Blok M

Blok M is a popular business and shopping quarter; it was the “it” place during the 80s and 90s. Needless to say, there are a lot of good food options to find in this southern Jakarta hub.

Why: A cozy coffee shop with faux-vintage interior offering some the best Indonesian beans.
What to order: Anything from the manual brew bar, or if you’re feeling decadent: Affogato Orgasm (espresso shot with vanilla ice cream and durian).

2. Soto Ayam Ambengan Pak Askuri
Why: A good street side place for breakfast after spending time at Blok M’s morning market.
What to order: The soto with all the available toppings. Go crazy.

3. Ketupat Sayur Pariaman Pak Man
Why: Minang style ketupat sayur straight from West Sumatra; open for breakfast.
What to order: Ketupat sayur with gulai pakis and rendang. Breakfast of champions!

4. Daitokyo Sakaba
Why: Japanese eatery in the heart of Jakarta’s Little Tokyo.
What to order: Their tasty and tender gyutan don, with the calming miso soup.

Why: Authentic Japanese pastries.
What to order: Nameraka Pudding, a soft dessert dish made of cream, vanilla beans and fresh milk with caramel sauce.

Why: Wide variety of dishes for lamb lovers.
What to order: Their namesake dish, grilled lamb, is very tender.

Why: Fried rice that comes in colors. You read that right.
What to order: The namesake dish, red, green and black, served with omelet and anchovies.

Why: When you can’t decide what to eat. It’s a foodcourt.
What to order: MieGyu, mie aceh served with wagyu.

Why: A venture of Ombé Kofie, Djule is as an extension of the popular coffee shop in Muara Karang.
What to order: Regular Flight: latte, espresso shot and sparkling water with a side of knowledge from the barista.

10. Kari Umbi
Why: Indonesian traditional snacks.
What to order: The legendary siomay. The oldest dish in the shop.
