CHICKEN FIGHT: Ayam Taliwang Competition at Qunci Villas

Upscale spa resort Qunci Villas in Lombok played host to the second Ayam Taliwang Competition on Feb. 12, amid lush greenery on Mangsit Beach.

The Ayam Taliwang Competition 2017 was launched in February 2015 as part of their “Month of Love” program, aiming to showcase the best of the best of Lombok’s signature dish ayam taliwang.

Ayam taliwang, said to be a dish favoured by nobles of the Sasak people, who are native to Lombok, is grilled chicken coated deliciously with fiery sambal.

Six different teams representing the best cooks on the island participated in the event. They represented Katamaran Resort, Sudamala Suites & Villas, Hotel Tugu Lombok, Golden Palace Hotel, SPICE Restaurant and local eating house Taliwang Kebon Radja.

Qunci Villas Executive Chef Gianluca Visciglia said the resort held the competition to help promote the local Sasak cuisine. “Not only that, we also want to put the beautiful island of Lombok on the map not only for is natural beauty but also for its excellent cuisine and the ayam taliwang is the dish that can describe Lombok at is best.”

The competition is supposed to be a bi-annual event.

“However, due to a very good response from the community and Lombok hotels, we are thinking to try to do it every year,” Gianluca said with a smile.

Four judges: Gianluca himself, FoodieS publisher Jed Doble, TV chef Lucky Andreono and TV personality Matteo Guerinoni made up the decision maker’s team.

At the end of the day, the judges named the team from Golden Palace Hotel in Mataram as the winners, with runners-up comprising the team from SPICE Restaurant in Senggigi and Sudamala Suites & Villas.
