Gaggan Anand’s eponymous Bangkok restaurant secured the No.1 spot in the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants annual ranking for a third consecutive year, as Indonesia’s representative Locavore in Bali took the Highest Climber Award by rising 27 places to No. 22.

Before an audience of the region’s most celebrated chefs, industry VIPs and international media, the list of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2017, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, was announced at an awards ceremony at the W Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.

Restaurant André, which came in at No. 3 last year, moved up one spot to No. 2. And surprisingly, the two-Michelin-starred Narisawa, ranked for the past few years at No. 2 and considered by many to be a potential usurper to the No. 1 throne, dropped to No. 6. Rounding out the top five are Amber, a French-ish restaurant in Hong Kong, the Italian 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana (which jumps nine spots from its No. 13 ranking last year), and chef David Thompson’s Nahm in Bangkok.

The 2017 list also welcomed 10 new entries, while China, Japan, Singapore and Thailand each count nine restaurants on the list.

According to the 300-plus voters, Gaggan is boundary-pushing but never too serious: a restaurant where fun dining is taken to a new level, but not at the expense of taste or technique. Gaggan Anand’s fertile imagination and culinary wit are played out in a lengthy but always fun tasting menu which balances the soulfulness of Indian street food with hyper-modern cooking techniques to unrivaled effect. Kolkata-born Anand is something of a superstar in the food world, as much for his effervescent personality as his boundary-pushing dishes. After a life-changing stint in the kitchen at El Bulli, the chef opened his eponymous Bangkok restaurant in 2010, where he has reimagined the notion of ‘progressive Indian cuisine’. He has since opened burger and beer restaurant Meatlicious with his wife and has backed new restaurants led by young talent, such as Sühring.

Closer to home, Locavore’s modern European cooking with hyper-local ingredients in mountainous Ubud has brought the restaurant to a meteoric rise. As the name would suggest, Locavore is all about local, from the raw Balinese abalone to the Sumbawa Island oyster, and even through to the plates, silverware and cocktail glasses, which are made in nearby workshops.

Chefs Eelke Plasmeijer and Ray Adriansyah make up the dynamic duo behind Indonesia’s only entrant into this year’s list. They met in Jakarta and the pair soon moved to Bali where they ran the kitchen at Alila Ubud. Combining their passion for cooking with sustainably sourced local ingredients, Eelke and Ray decided to take the concept to the next level, teaming up with restaurant manager Adi Karmayasa to create Locavore in November 2013.

Locavore’s menu lists the origins of all its ingredients, so diners can see the kohlrabi comes from the restaurant’s vegetable garden in Payangan, the pickled seaweed from Lombok and the beef short ribs from Malang, Java. Vegetable sources include “Owen’s garden” – the nearby farm of an Englishman in Plaga, central Bali.

Locavore guests can choose from the ‘locavore’ or the vegetarian ‘herbivore’ option;  each is five to seven dishes long and influenced by European and Indonesian cuisines. Plates might include pan-fried mackerel from Jimbaran, South Bali, served on pickled sour dough and paired with a cocktail of fresh tomato, basil leaves, jackfruit syrup and homemade apple brandy.
