So we thought why not highlight warung as we noticed a lack of attention given to the staple of many Jakartans’ diet.

IT’S PRETTY extraordinary when a warung nasi tegal, or popularly known as warteg, is well-known beyond its neighborhood as these simple food outlets can be found on almost every block in Jakarta. But somehow, Warung Nasi Tegal Kemang Jaya located in our Kemang neighborhood has people coming out from all over the capital.

For Pak Kalyo and Ibu Ningsi, their labor of love has made them popular among locals and foreigners for the last 20 plus years. Their simple 24-hour business serves the essentials such as tempe orek, gule daun singkong, ayam goreng and soto ayam among others at a very affordable rate. Ibu Ningsi and her squad from her hometown of Tegal, Central Java, cook three times a day to meet the demand of hungry folks. At any given time, you’re bound to find at least 20 side dishes, or lauk, waiting.

What is it that makes this place so dope that has people flocking from all over? The adorable couple testified that they use bold ingredients and are not afraid to try new things in their dishes that they found others are not daring to follow. On top of that, they also enjoy exploring other warung and street vendors, or kaki lima, like any foodie couple would. This way they compare and make adjustments with their own cooking. Lastly, Ibu Ningsi is strict on quality control as every dish that goes out is tasted by Ibu Ningsi. You can trust that having an establishment as long as she has, she knows what is good.

Despite the success we see today, it wasn’t always that way. The story of Warteg Kemang Jaya is about someone embodying the Aglxy mentality of “live to strive, strive to live”.

Pak Kalyo left Tegal after graduating elementary school to work for someone in Jakarta. For seven years, he struggled to keep his own place open as he was evicted multiple times. Although the situation seemed hopeless, he never let his mind off his goal of having a stable place. After acquiring the space we now know today, he and Ibu Ningsi fought off floods to protect their small wooden shack as the warung sat two meters below the road. Working through the odds, they raised their warung to the height of the road and steadily flourished as they added another dining room.

Today they have a branch in Kemang Timur and their extended family has opened wartegs in Kemang, Ampera and other neighborhoods.
