Just behind the busy downtown thoroughfare of Jl. MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta, is the Jl. Haji Agus Salim, a road stretching just a little over one kilometer long. The road is more famously known as Jl. Sabang (its old name) and for hosting a variety of tasty culinary establishment. Here are some of them.

  1. Kopi Oey

Why: Selection of dishes curated by Bondan Winarno, one of Indonesia’s most celebrated culinary experts, and its throwback interior design.
What to order: Lontong Cap Gomeh (rice cake, coconut milk and broth, sweetened tempe, shreds of chicken breast), Gado-gado (steamed vegetables and peanut sauce) and of course the signature Vietnam-styly drip coffee.

  1. Modern Bakery Sakura Anpan

Why: Despite having “modern” in its name, it’s actually an old-school bakery and snack and cake shop. Enter and bask in the nostalgia of retro Jakarta bakery.
What to order: Fruit pie and the assortment of jajanan pasar snacks such as lapis surabaya, pastel, kroket, klepon and the favorite risoles with smoked beef, mayo and egg.

Why: Tasty portion of pempek, the signature fish cake à la Palembang, South Sumatra, as well as other Palembang dishes.
What to order: Assorted pempek, fried (the way true Jakartan would like them) and sweet savory silver catfish stew Pindang Patin.

  1. Warung Soto Ceker dan Ranjau Pak Gendut

Why: The ceker (chicken feet) in the soto is clean and soft, but if you are not fond of chicken feet, you may order soto ranjau, which is using chicken meat but with the bone still attached.
What to order: Soto Ceker and Soto Ranjau.

Why: It’s difficult to find this dish on Jakarta. The real nasi gandul in Pati, Middle Java, using buffalo meat, but in this place it has been modified using beef. Other than that, everything is the same, served with banana leaf and the thick sweet-savory gravy tasted great.
What to order: Nasi Gandul (you may order two because the portion is rather small).

Why: Classic environment, right place for someone who would like to try or craving middle east cuisine.
